Whether it is a discount
dental plan or dental insurance
the goal of both is to protect people from financial hardship that
incurs from the high prices of dental services. It wasn’t
that long ago that people didn’t have an option other than
dental insurance or paying high prices. Discount dental didn’t
come into play until the early 90’s. If you are going to take
care of preventative steps dental insurance will save you a lot
of money. The trouble with dental insurance is the annual limit.
Once you have hit the annual limit the rest has to come out of pocket.
They also don’t cover all specialty dental services or preexisting
services and there is extensive paperwork. The prices for the premiums
are often high but give you some services free of charge such as
teeth cleaning and x-rays. There are some obvious benefits to having
dental insurance. In 2006 the National Association of Dental Plans
(NADP) released a survey stating that only 57% of the US public
had dental coverage of some kind. Of those 96% got it through their
employer.
With the high prices that can result in meeting your annual limit
and specialty services, discount dental plans can be a very helpful
alternative to dental insurance plans. There are a few questions
to ask any company before you sign up for discount dental to ensure
you are being taken care of by a legitimate company. Make sure the
company is licensed to offer discounts in your state and are backed
by the Better Business Bureau. Get information such as physical
address, mailing address and number, and check out the web site.
Ask the company if they can mail you a packet with their providers,
the plan information and details before you sign up. Check and see
if they are affiliated or endorsed by any other organizations and
ask if the company is a member of the NADP. You can check out the
National Association of Dental Plans on their web site to see
if the discount dental is a participator.
